Rain forces IPL 2023 final to be moved to reserve day

Continuous rain and thunderstorms in Ahmedabad have compelled the final match of IPL 2023 to be rescheduled to the reserve day (Monday, May 29, 2023).

Rain forces IPL 2023 final to be moved to reserve day

This is the first instance in which an IPL final has been moved to a reserve day.

The heavy rainfall made it impossible for even the toss to take place on the originally planned day for the final. Assuming the weather allows, the game will now be conducted in its entirety on the reserve day.

The match officials waited until 23:00 Local Time before calling off the game, as the rain prevented even a shortened match from occurring. The rules had provisions for a shortened game if conditions permitted, and there were brief periods when the rain subsided enough for the umpires to assess the situation.

However, despite being satisfied with the drainage facilities and the outfield conditions at that point, further rain prevented any further action.

The rescheduled match will begin at 19:30 Local Time on the reserve day.

The last time a playoff match was played on the reserve day was in 2014, specifically Qualifier 1 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings.
